You’re Graduating Soon – Now What?

Spring graduation season is just around the corner. We know that many of you have submitted your paperwork for your degree and ordered your cap and gown, but have you figured out what comes next? If not, don’t sweat it because you’re not alone. Most of your life has been spent in a classroom. So, it can be challenging to figure out what to do once you’ve made that final walk across the stage. Our experienced Cape Reserve team members have been in your shoes and have three pieces of advice to help you step into this new chapter of your life with confidence!

“Never look down to test the ground before taking your next step; only he who keeps his eye fixed on the far horizon will find the right road.” – Dag Hammarskjold

You are about to embark on a new and exciting adventure, but before you do, look around and take it all in. The moment you wrap up your last class, that’s it. Don’t rush this time of your life. Instead, enjoy every minute. You’re never going to feel like you feel right now again. Eager for what’s to come but scared at the same time. Before you know it, you’ll be working a full-time job, paying bills, and dealing with the 900 other things that fall on your plate when you enter the “real world.” Don’t take that next step after college until you’ve committed this stage of your life to memory!

You’ve hit submit on your last exam. That means you’re done with learning, right? Wrong! Learning never stops. Many of your classmates are going to spend the upcoming months in leisure, basking in the joy of their recent accomplishments. Our advice is to do the opposite and go full speed ahead. Take advantage of every opportunity to gain a new skill, build your network, or even acquire on-hand experience. You’ve spent years working hard to be the candidate recruiters want to meet. Now is the time to showcase your desire for greatness!

Our last piece of advice is going to challenge many of you. As you inch closer to graduation, some of your classmates are going to start announcing their next steps – grad school, internships, careers. If offers aren’t pouring in for you, don’t get discouraged. Your journey is your own; embrace it. The right path for you will show itself when it’s time. We know that it can be hard to keep your attitude when success doesn’t come knocking straightaway. Just remember, you are qualified. Keep putting yourself out there!

We wish you all the best of luck as you wrap up these last few months of school. Graduation is an exciting time, and you should enjoy every bit of it. Take pictures in your cap and gown, throw a party, go on vacation – do it all!! We can’t tell you what tomorrow will bring, but we do know that you get out of life what you put in. So, be happy and keep pushing forward!
